Coastal Drawers DIY
I’d been wanting some new drawers for the bedroom for ages but our budget was always being used on more urgent things. The old drawers and bedside cabinets were painted in a dark grey and while still usable they were just plain ugly and really darkened the room.
I’d seen some gorgeous drawer sets on various sites and the coastal look I really wanted was a pure white with wooden tops.

I ‘m a massive Pinterest fan and have to be careful not to spend hours on there just browsing! For inspiration though it’s really the best site to use and it’s where I looked for ideas of how I could re-vamp the drawers we had and save some money.
There are lots of tutorials on how to upscale furniture, (which I really needed as I’m not the greatest with DIY!) and I found loads of ideas for my drawer sets.
I’d received a Black and Decker Mouse sander for my birthday (yes it’s what I wanted!) so I decided to give it a go and sand down the units. If the wood was still good then I could re-paint them.
I removed all the handles and took the doors off before starting with the sanding. This took a while but I wanted to do a really good job. The mouse is a great little tool and you get extra bits with it to get into corners and difficult bits. I chose a shabby chic chalk furniture paint in pure white which came out a really great colour. I gave the furniture two coats of paint.
You can see the real difference after I’d finished the painting, the units looked almost brand new!
I used a walnut colour wood stain on the tops to give them that natural coastal feel that wood brings. I kept the finish quite rustic as I didn’t want them to look too new. I couldn’t decide on the handles straight away as I didn’t want something that would look too modern. When I found these rope style handles on Amazon and they were such a reasonable price, I ordered them straight away as they are perfect and really give the drawers a seaside feel!
Here are some images of the finished units which I managed to bring in at a cost of under £60 for all of them (I already had the wood stain). There was effort involved but its really satisfying having furniture that you’ve spent time up scaling. The next purchase for our home will be a new bedroom carpet!
