SHOP THE POST:
This is the time of year when I start planning a picnic but with all the rain we’ve had this June so far it’s making it difficult to pin down a good day and relying on the forecast doesn’t always work out well! A picnic is no good in the wet so I have everything on standby for last minute food prep, and for packing everything into the car boot for a quick get away. Here are my top tips for having the perfect picnic including some easy yummy recipes which are great for preparing quickly the night before, or some can be made up first thing in the morning before you set off.

My favourite chicken slaw baguette is perfect to take on a picnic
A blanket is essential if you are planning to picnic on the grass or sand and don’t have any seating with you, they also help protect you and your food from the elements. The most hardy outdoor blankets have a waterproof nylon backing. This lovely blue and white striped blanket rolls up and has a handy strap for carrying with you.
I’m a great believer that a picnic isn’t a proper picnic without a good basket (or if you are a bit more modern a picnic carry all) There are some really amazing expensive versions out there that are a bit beyond my budget but the Luxury 4 Person Wicker Chiller Hamper is a really lovely basket which is priced at only £39.99 and a great carry all is the Double Decker Soft Cooler Bag Your blanket, outdoor games, and any other essentials can be packed in a separate oversized tote.
Serving boards are an extra and are not essential to a picnic, especially if carrying a lot is going to be a problem, but they do make the food more shareable and beautiful especially if you are planning on creating a rustic style sharing platter with meats and cheeses. You can play around with different sizes and textures and they are great for giving you a flat surface, especially if you are picnicking on the sand. These Acacia Wood Serving Boards are perfect.
The last thing you want on your picnic is for pesky insects to be constantly landing on your food when you have all been served and are eating. I always make sure I take some handy food covers with me such as these , hand-woven outdoor picnic food covers which look nice too!
A picnic should definitely be comfortable, so make sure to add in some outdoor cushions for everyone to sit and lounge on while eating and relaxing. If your like me you will probably want to co-ordinate the cushions to match your blanket and colour scheme so it’s entirely a personal choice. I love these blue denim scatter cushions and also these grey print water resistant cushions.
To keep the bugs away a citronella candle is a must to keep the mosquitos at bay. This outdoor citronella candle in glass jar should keep the pests at bay or the woodwick citronella candle will add a touch of elegance to your picnic setting.
Make your picnic photo worthy by adding some flowers. Buy a bouquet at the farmer’s market on your way to the park, or pick an assortment of wildflowers when you get there. Then, display them in a vase to add a sweet and colourful pop of colour.
Pack Dish Towels
Not only will they act as napkins, they can also be used to soak up any condensation in your picnic basket and to wipe down your boards and glasses when you’ve finished.
When it comes to selecting the perfect picnic food, make sure that you choose things that are easy to share and eat. Think finger foods, fresh vegetables and fruits, and small appetisers. Ensure you include colour in the dishes. I love this summer garden salad recipe by Weelicious and these portable prosciutto and mozzarella skewers by The Comfort of Cooking.
